Cristiano Ronaldo’s legacy at Manchester United has claimed another accolade – the club’s Goal of the Decade, as voted for by a worldwide legion of fans.
I'm not denying it was a great goal, but there are some gems that I feel have been missed. Maybe I'm just in the minority though!
Readers of United’s official magazine, Inside United, and website, ManUtd.com, were asked to identify the best goal from a shortlist of 20 strikes spanning 2000-2009.
Thousands responded, and Ronaldo’s astonishing goal against Porto in the Champions League quarter-final in April 2009 is the clear winner with 20 per cent of the votes.
Even by the winger’s extraordinary standards, this was a goal which came out of the blue. There looked to be nothing on as Ronaldo picked up the ball 40 yards out, but the accuracy and power of his strike rendered Porto keeper Helton helpless.
The runner-up is Wayne Rooney’s sumptuous edge-of-the-box volley against Newcastle at Old Trafford five years ago – this received 15 per cent of the votes. Paul Scholes claims third and fourth place in the list, courtesy of his thunderbolt at Villa Park in 2006 and his Champions League screamer against Barcelona in 2008. Ronaldo rounds off the top five with his unstoppable free-kick past Portsmouth's David James in January 2008.
